A Deployment Operation is an operation that creates, configures, updates, replaces, or removes an identified deployment subject within a target Infrastructure Environment.

A Deployment Operation may apply to:

• Infrastructure Resources
• Virtual Machines
• Kubernetes Clusters
• Containerized Workloads
• Platform Services
• Configuration
• Relationships among deployed subjects

A Deployment Operation may:

• Create a deployment subject
• Configure a deployment subject
• Update a deployment subject
• Replace a deployment subject
• Remove a deployment subject
• Establish relationships among deployment subjects

A Deployment Operation may use:

• A Crucible Description
• An Infrastructure Configuration
• An Infrastructure Baseline
• A Machine Image
• A Container Image
• Platform Independent Information
• Platform Specific Information

A Deployment Operation differs from a deployment result:

• A Deployment Operation performs an action on a deployment subject
• A deployment result is the state produced by the Deployment Operation

A Deployment Operation differs from Deployment Validation:

• A Deployment Operation creates or changes a deployment subject
• Deployment Validation evaluates the resulting state against applicable Acceptance Criteria

A Deployment Operation differs from Deployment Rollback:

• A Deployment Operation produces an intended deployment change
• Deployment Rollback reverses the effects of an identified deployment

A Deployment Operation does not by itself establish that the resulting deployment:

• Satisfies applicable Acceptance Criteria
• Is compliant with an applicable Baseline
• Is authorized for operation
• Is secure
• Is available
• Is suitable for its intended purpose

Separate requirements govern Deployment Validation, compliance assessment, approval, activation, rollback, and retirement.

The term does not prescribe:

• A deployment tool
• A deployment language
• A cloud Provider
• A target platform
• An orchestration technology
• A deployment interface
• A connected or disconnected operating condition

Crucible performs a Deployment Operation that creates a Virtual Machine from an identified Machine Image within a target Infrastructure Environment.
