Role Assignment
Discussion
A Role Assignment associates an entity with a Role in a specified context.
A Role defines a function, capacity, or position that may be performed or held. A Role Assignment identifies the entity that performs or holds that Role in a particular activity, transaction, contract, agreement, process, situation, or regulatory context.
The entity may be a Party or another entity permitted by the applicable model. When a Party performs a Role, the Role Assignment provides the relationship through which the Party participates in the specified context.
A Role Assignment may identify:
-
The entity performing or holding the Role
-
The assigned Role
-
The context in which the Role applies
-
The effective period of the assignment
-
The authority or basis for the assignment
-
A represented Party, when the entity acts on behalf of another Party
-
The status of the assignment
-
Applicable constraints
-
Evidence supporting the assignment
-
Provenance describing how the assignment was established
The Role Assignment is distinct from the entity, the Role, and the context. A change to a Role Assignment does not change the identity of the entity or the definition of the Role.

The term Role Assignment names the explicit relationship structure used by this corpus. OMG Commons provides the underlying concepts of Role, performer, context, and applicable period but does not define a concept having this exact name.
The permanent source record should be maintained in the applicable public References annex when a reference identifier is assigned.
Note
-
A Role Assignment is distinct from the Role being assigned
-
A Role Assignment is distinct from the entity performing or holding the Role
-
An entity may have multiple Role Assignments
-
The same Role may be assigned to multiple entities when the applicable context permits
-
Assignments of the same Role in different contexts are separate Role Assignments
-
A Role Assignment may be limited to a specified effective period
-
A Role Assignment does not, by itself, establish that the entity is authorized, qualified, or eligible to perform the Role
-
When an entity acts on behalf of another Party, the performing entity and the represented Party are recorded separately
-
Ending a Role Assignment does not remove the entity, redefine the Role, or erase the historical assignment
-
Evidence and provenance may be retained to explain how the assignment was established, changed, or terminated
Example
Example Bank participates in an FX Trade as a counterparty.
The applicable Role Assignment identifies:
-
Example Bank as the Party performing the Role
-
Counterparty as the Role
-
The FX Trade as the context
-
The period during which the assignment applies
If Example Bank is also responsible for regulatory reporting, that responsibility is represented by a separate Role Assignment identifying Reporting Counterparty as the Role and the applicable reporting context.
