Lifecycle Stage

A Lifecycle Stage is a defined and distinguishable part of the lifecycle of a system, artifact, environment, service, or process.

Each Lifecycle Stage has an identified purpose, expected inputs, activities, outputs, responsibilities, controls, and transition conditions.

Lifecycle Stages support separation of concerns by allowing an organization to govern creation, assessment, approval, operation, maintenance, promotion, and retirement as distinct controlled activities.

Within Crucible, lifecycle stages may include pull, build, scan, upload, platform initialization, deployment, verification, audit, maintenance, promotion, and teardown.

Generalized from systems engineering, software lifecycle management, configuration management, and process architecture usage and specialized for the Crucible architecture and operational model.

A Lifecycle Stage may contain several activities and may invoke multiple tools or services.

The boundary between Lifecycle Stages depends on the governance model and does not necessarily correspond to a single command, process, or organizational responsibility.

The image-build Lifecycle Stage consumes an Image Baseline and controlled dependencies and produces a Machine Image, build records, compliance findings, and associated provenance before the image enters verification and promotion stages.
