A Filename provides the name used to identify a file within an applicable file-naming context.

A Filename may include a File Extension, but an extension is not required.

Examples of filenames include:

Makefile

The rules governing valid filenames depend on the applicable environment. Such rules may govern permitted characters, reserved names, maximum length, case sensitivity, escaping, quoting, or other naming constraints.

A Filename identifies the file by name. It does not, by itself, identify the location of the file. Location is represented by a File Path or another applicable location mechanism.

A name assigned to a file within an applicable file-naming context.
