An Artifact Catalog Record is a machine-readable metadata record that describes an Artifact under Crucible control.

An Artifact Catalog Record identifies the Artifact and records the information required to manage, locate, verify, relate, and use the Artifact throughout its lifecycle.

An Artifact Catalog Record may describe:

The Artifact name The Artifact identifier The Artifact type One or more versions One or more Artifact Representations Media types and formats Cryptographic digests and digital signatures One or more locations Source and producer information Provenance Validation and verification results Approval, release, and retention status Relationships to other Artifacts

The Artifact Catalog Record remains distinct from the Artifact that it describes. The record may exist when Crucible references an Artifact without storing the Artifact content locally.

An Artifact Catalog Record may change when metadata, status, relationships, or locations change without changing the Artifact or its Artifact Representations.

Each Artifact under Crucible control has an Artifact Catalog Record.

An Artifact Catalog Record may describe an Artifact stored within Crucible, stored in an external repository, or available only within another environment.

A change to an Artifact location does not necessarily create a new Artifact version or Artifact Representation. The Artifact Catalog Record may instead record the new or additional location.

The Artifact Catalog Record does not by itself constitute the Artifact content.

An Artifact Catalog Record for a container image identifies the image name, version, operating system, processor architecture, cryptographic digest, signature, validation results, repository locations, and relationships to the packages and configuration Artifacts used to build the image.
