Discussion
An Organization Classification characterizes the nature, function, authority, regulatory category, business category, or other defined characteristic of an Organization.

An Organization Classification may depend on:

  * The applicable business context
  * The applicable regulatory framework
  * The applicable Jurisdiction
  * The authority assigning the classification
  * The activity performed by the Organization
  * The financial products or services provided by the Organization
  * The Effective Period
  * The classification scheme or Controlled Vocabulary

An Organization may have more than one Organization Classification. For example, the same Organization may be classified as a Financial Institution, Settlement Institution, and Service Provider.

An Organization Classification remains distinct from the Identity of the classified Organization. Creating, modifying, suspending, or ending a classification does not, by itself, create, modify, replace, or remove the Organization.

An Organization Classification also remains distinct from a Role. A classification describes an Organization's nature, function, authority, or recognized category. A Role describes how a Party participates in a specified context.

For example, Financial Institution may classify an Organization. Counterparty identifies a Role performed by that Organization in a particular transaction.

An Organization Classification also remains distinct from Legal Entity Recognition. Organization Classification describes an Organization. Legal Entity Recognition records jurisdiction-dependent legal status.

This corpus defines the expression //Organization Classification//. The referenced sources define Organization classifications, categories, purposes, and related concepts but do not necessarily define a concept having this exact name or scope.

Note
  * An Organization Classification applies to an Organization
  * An Organization may have zero or more Organization Classifications
  * An Organization Classification does not create an additional Organization
  * An Organization Classification does not replace Organization Identity
  * A change in Organization Classification does not, by itself, change Organization Identity
  * An Organization Classification does not establish Legal Entity Recognition
  * An Organization Classification does not, by itself, establish authority to act
  * An Organization Classification remains distinct from a Role
  * A classification may depend on a specified business or regulatory context
  * A classification may depend on an applicable Jurisdiction
  * A time-dependent Organization Classification identifies its applicable Effective Period
  * An Organization Classification identifies the applicable classification scheme or Controlled Vocabulary
  * A classification entry should have a stable identifier when systems reference it independently of its label
  * The authority or source assigning a classification should be identified when applicable
  * Applicable Evidence may support the assignment of an Organization Classification
  * The platform-independent definition does not require a particular enumeration, code list, identifier scheme, database representation, programming-language type, or serialization format

Example
**Example Bank** is an Organization.

The Information Model associates the following Organization Classifications with **Example Bank**:

^ Organization Classification ^ Context ^ Effective Period ^
| Financial Institution | General financial-services context | Current |
| Settlement Institution | FX settlement context | Current |
| Service Provider | Settlement-service agreement with **Example Brokerage** | Duration of the applicable agreement |

The classifications describe characteristics or functions associated with **Example Bank**. They do not create three separate Organizations.

**Example Bank** acts as a Counterparty in a specified FX Trade. Counterparty identifies a Role performed in the transaction. It is not an Organization Classification.

**Example Bank** also has a Legal Entity Recognition in Jurisdiction A. That recognition records its jurisdiction-dependent legal status. It remains distinct from the Financial Institution, Settlement Institution, and Service Provider classifications.

A platform-specific implementation may represent an Organization Classification Controlled Vocabulary as an enumeration:

<code>
enum OrganizationClassification {
    GOVERNMENT_BODY,
    REGULATORY_AUTHORITY,
    EXECUTION_FACILITY,
    CLEARING_ORGANIZATION,
    TRADE_REPOSITORY,
    SETTLEMENT_INSTITUTION,
    FINANCIAL_INSTITUTION,
    SERVICE_PROVIDER,
    INTERNAL_ORGANIZATIONAL_UNIT
}
</code>

This enumeration implements the Controlled Vocabulary. It is not the authoritative definition of the classifications or their applicable contexts.
