Information Model

An Information Model describes the information relevant to a specified subject area or system context. It identifies the concepts represented by the information, the relationships among those concepts, the rules governing their use, and the constraints applying to their representations.

An Information Model focuses on the meaning and organization of information rather than a particular storage technology, communication mechanism, programming language, or serialization format.

An Information Model can include:

  • Information concepts
  • Complex and scalar Datatypes
  • Relationships
  • Roles
  • Identifiers and references
  • Cardinalities
  • Constraints
  • Enumerations
  • Controlled vocabularies
  • State-dependent information
  • Lifecycle relationships
  • Provenance and lineage relationships

A Conceptual Model identifies the principal concepts and relationships within a subject area. An Information Model refines those concepts by defining the information needed to represent them. A Data Model may further refine the Information Model for storage, exchange, processing, or another data-oriented purpose.

An Information Model may form part of a Platform Independent Model (PIM). One or more Platform Specific Models (PSMs) may realize the Information Model using IDL, JSON Schema, XML Schema, database schemas, programming-language types, or other implementation technologies.

model that represents the concepts, relationships, constraints, and rules governing information within a specified subject area or system context

Adapted from general systems engineering, information modeling, data modeling, and Model Driven Architecture (MDA) practice.

An Information Model defines information semantics independently of a specific implementation representation. An implementation schema may realize all or part of an Information Model without replacing the Information Model as the source of domain meaning.

The FX Information Model represents FX Trades, FX Swaps, Near Legs, Far Legs, Counterparties, Exchange Rates, Valuations, Margin Requirements, Collateral Positions, Settlement Instructions, Regulatory Reports, and Provenance Records. The FX Demo maps those concepts to DDS Topics and IDL types while preserving their platform-independent meaning.
