SIP-017 — Cross-Security-Boundary Integration
Statement
The security architecture SHALL define modular integration constructs supporting operations across Security Boundaries.
Rationale
Structured information may need to pass between Systems operating under different trust conditions, security Policies, access restrictions, classifications, or handling requirements. Such exchanges require explicit architectural mediation rather than implicit or unrestricted connectivity.
Modular integration constructs allow you to select, compose, evaluate, and replace the security responsibilities associated with a boundary crossing without binding the Reference Architecture to a particular security product or implementation technology.
Evaluation Criteria
The Submission satisfies this requirement when the security architecture:
-
Represents applicable Security Boundaries
-
Identifies the architectural elements and Roles participating in a boundary crossing
-
Defines modular constructs for mediating structured information across the boundary
-
Associates applicable security Policies and constraints with the crossing
-
Supports authorization, validation, filtering, transformation, release, or rejection as required by the applicable Policy
-
Preserves provenance and security-relevant information associated with the exchange
-
Supports recording of the controls and decisions applied at the boundary
-
Prevents a cross-boundary interaction from bypassing its applicable security controls
-
Remains independent of a required security product or implementation technology

Notes for Editors
This requirement defines architectural support for cross-security-boundary integration. It does not authorize any particular information transfer or replace the approval processes of the responsible security authorities.
Cross-jurisdictional and cross-security-boundary integration may overlap, but they are not equivalent. A Jurisdictional boundary may exist without a security boundary, and a security boundary may exist within a single Jurisdiction.
