Quality of Service (QoS)

Quality of Service (QoS) is a general term with different meanings at different architecture layers.

In this document set, use the DDS-specific term for middleware quality-of-service policies and the Internet-specific term for network-level traffic treatment.

DDS Quality of Service (DDS QoS) applies at the middleware and data-distribution layer. Internet Quality of Service (Internet QoS) applies at the packet-switched network layer. DDS QoS and Internet QoS remain distinct, but an implementation profile may align DDS QoS policies with Internet QoS mechanisms when the selected deployment environment supports that mapping.

DDS QoS is not Internet QoS. DDS QoS controls middleware-level data-distribution behaviour. Internet QoS controls network-level packet treatment. A DDS implementation may use Internet QoS mechanisms where the implementation, transport, operating system, and network infrastructure support that mapping.

For DDS implementation mappings, use DDS Quality of Service (DDS QoS). For packet classification, marking, prioritisation, shaping, policing, queuing, scheduling, latency, jitter, packet loss, congestion, bandwidth allocation, or delivery priority, use Internet Quality of Service (Internet QoS).
