Internet QoS is distinct from DDS Quality of Service (DDS QoS). Internet QoS concerns characteristics of network communication and packet delivery. DDS QoS concerns middleware policies governing data distribution behavior among DDS entities. Internet QoS may involve Communication Characteristics such as Latency, packet loss, delay variation, throughput, or other characteristics of network service when those characteristics are relevant to the governing architecture, Configuration, or Test Definition. The term does not imply that every Internet QoS mechanism controls or guarantees every communication characteristic. Different networks, protocols, implementations, and administrative domains may provide different forms and levels of Quality of Service. ===== Definition ===== //the quality of packet delivery provided by an Internet Protocol network as characterized by measurable or controlled network communication characteristics// ===== Source ===== DIDO Solutions architectural definition derived from Internet Protocol networking and Quality of Service concepts used in distributed-system communication and testing. ===== Note ===== Internet QoS describes Quality of Service at the network communication layer. Do not use Internet QoS as a synonym for DDS Quality of Service (DDS QoS). DDS QoS operates at the data-distribution middleware layer and may interact with, but does not replace, Internet QoS. Specific Internet QoS characteristics become normative only when identified by an applicable requirement, Configuration, or Test Definition. ===== Example ===== A Test Definition may require a Virtual Network to reproduce a specified network Latency while DDS independently applies middleware Quality of Service policies governing delivery reliability or data availability. ---- <WRAP centeralign> © 2026 Dido Solutions, Inc. and Jackrabbit Consulting, Inc. </WRAP> dido/99_annexes/annex-b-terms-and-definitions/i/internet_qos.txt Last modified: 2026/08/22 18:01by nick_dido
