MO-006e — Infrastructure Environment Retirement

Crucible SHALL transition an Infrastructure Environment to Retirement when the applicable Retirement conditions are satisfied.

This requirement derives from:

The Original Requirement states:

The system SHALL support infrastructure lifecycle management from initial deployment through retirement.[C1]

MO-006e preserves the terminal lifecycle intent expressed by through retirement in the Original Requirement by requiring Crucible to transition an Infrastructure Environment to Retirement after satisfaction of the applicable Retirement conditions.

The separate requirements derived from MO-006 address:

The Original Requirement identifies Retirement as the end of infrastructure lifecycle management but does not define the required Retirement transition.

Without an explicit Retirement requirement, an evaluator cannot reliably determine:

  • Which Infrastructure Environment is subject to Retirement
  • Which lifecycle state precedes Retirement
  • Which conditions permit the Retirement transition
  • Which approvals or authorizations apply
  • Whether unresolved operational, security, compliance, or preservation obligations block Retirement
  • Whether Retirement completed successfully
  • Whether the Infrastructure Environment entered the Retirement state
  • The Evidence required to demonstrate Retirement

The phrase through retirement embeds a separate terminal lifecycle obligation within the broader lifecycle-management requirement.

MO-006e:

  • Identifies Crucible as the responsible actor
  • Identifies the Infrastructure Environment as the subject of the transition
  • Identifies Retirement as the target lifecycle state
  • Requires satisfaction of the applicable Retirement conditions before the transition
  • Separates Retirement from lifecycle assignment, lifecycle initiation, current-state determination, and general lifecycle-transition execution

Retirement represents the terminal lifecycle state of an Infrastructure Environment when the assigned Operational Lifecycle defines Retirement as its terminal state.

Retirement conditions can include:

  • Authorization by the responsible authority
  • Completion of required operational activities
  • Resolution or disposition of outstanding failures and exceptions
  • Preservation of required configuration records
  • Preservation of required deployment records
  • Preservation of required security records
  • Preservation of required compliance records
  • Preservation of required Evidence
  • Preservation of required Provenance
  • Preservation of required Traceability
  • Completion of required data disposition
  • Completion of required Artifact disposition
  • Completion of required resource disposition
  • Revocation of applicable credentials and access
  • Termination of applicable services
  • Completion of required archival activities

The assigned Operational Lifecycle defines the applicable Retirement conditions. Not every condition listed above necessarily applies to every Infrastructure Environment.

Infrastructure Environment Retirement supports:

  • Controlled termination of infrastructure use
  • Prevention of premature Retirement
  • Completion of required preservation and disposition activities
  • Revocation of obsolete access
  • Release or disposition of infrastructure resources
  • Preservation of lifecycle history
  • Confirmation of the terminal lifecycle state
  • Generation of auditable Evidence

Satisfaction of the Retirement conditions permits Crucible to execute the Retirement transition. Satisfaction of those conditions does not by itself establish successful completion of Retirement.

A failed or incomplete Retirement transition does not establish that the Infrastructure Environment entered the Retirement state. MO-006c governs determination of the current lifecycle state after the transition attempt.

This requirement does not assign or initiate the Operational Lifecycle. MO-006a and MO-006b establish those requirements.

This requirement does not determine the current lifecycle state. MO-006c establishes current lifecycle state determination.

This requirement is the specific Retirement transition derived from the broader lifecycle-transition behavior established by MO-006d.

This requirement applies to:

  • Retirement transitions
  • Retirement conditions
  • Retirement approvals
  • Retirement authorizations
  • Retirement requests
  • Retirement results
  • Retirement records
  • Infrastructure Environment records
  • Infrastructure Deployment records
  • Configuration records
  • Security records
  • Compliance records
  • Failure records
  • Exception records
  • Data disposition records
  • Artifact disposition records
  • Resource disposition records
  • Credential-revocation records
  • Service-termination records
  • Archival records

Verification confirms that:

  1. The Infrastructure Environment is identified
  2. The assigned Operational Lifecycle is identified
  3. The current lifecycle state is identified
  4. Retirement is a permitted target state of the assigned Operational Lifecycle
  5. The applicable Retirement conditions are identified
  6. The applicable Retirement conditions are satisfied before the transition begins
  7. Crucible executes the Retirement transition
  8. The Retirement transition produces an identified result
  9. The transition result supports determination of the resulting lifecycle state
  10. The Retirement record preserves the required Evidence, Provenance, and Traceability

Verification includes:

  • Infrastructure Environment inspection
  • Operational Lifecycle assignment inspection
  • Current lifecycle-state inspection
  • Retirement-transition inspection
  • Retirement-condition inspection
  • Retirement-approval inspection
  • Retirement-authorization inspection
  • Retirement-request inspection
  • Satisfied-condition testing
  • Unsatisfied-condition testing
  • Retirement-transition execution testing
  • Retirement-completion testing
  • Retirement-failure testing
  • Retirement-result inspection
  • Resulting lifecycle-state inspection
  • Data disposition record inspection
  • Artifact disposition record inspection
  • Resource disposition record inspection
  • Credential-revocation record inspection
  • Service-termination record inspection
  • Archival record inspection
  • Evidence inspection
  • Provenance inspection
  • Traceability inspection

The verification record identifies:

  1. The Infrastructure Environment
  2. The assigned Operational Lifecycle
  3. The Operational Lifecycle identifier
  4. The Operational Lifecycle revision
  5. The lifecycle state preceding Retirement
  6. The Retirement transition
  7. The applicable Retirement conditions
  8. The result of each Retirement-condition evaluation
  9. The applicable approval or authorization
  10. The Retirement transition start date and time
  11. The Retirement transition completion date and time
  12. The Retirement result
  13. The resulting lifecycle-state determination
  14. Each incomplete disposition, revocation, termination, or archival activity
  15. Each identified failure or exception
  16. The observed result
  17. The generated Evidence

Phase 1 and subsequent phases

Not Assessed

Implementation status requires verification that the current Crucible implementation transitions an Infrastructure Environment to Retirement when the applicable Retirement conditions are satisfied.

Draft

This requirement derives from MO-006 in the Crucible System Requirements Specification, Version 1.1 Draft.

This requirement page should retain the stable requirement identifier MO-006e.

This page is a leaf requirement page and omits a trailing :start from its namespace.

Changes to the Statement should preserve the transition of an Infrastructure Environment to Retirement after satisfaction of the applicable Retirement conditions.

The Retirement definition should identify:

  • The Operational Lifecycle identifier
  • The Operational Lifecycle revision
  • The Retirement transition identifier
  • The lifecycle state preceding Retirement
  • The Retirement target state
  • The applicable Retirement conditions
  • The responsible approval or authorization authority
  • The Retirement completion criteria
  • The Retirement failure criteria
  • The required data disposition
  • The required Artifact disposition
  • The required resource disposition
  • The required credential revocation
  • The required service termination
  • The required archival activities
  • The associated Provenance
  • The associated Traceability
  • The supporting Evidence

Material changes should receive review and should update the related verification criteria, requirements realization, related architecture sections, and source records.
