MO-006e — Infrastructure Environment Retirement

Crucible SHALL transition an Infrastructure Environment to Retirement when its Retirement conditions are satisfied.

This requirement derives from:

The Original Requirement states:

The system SHALL support infrastructure lifecycle management from initial deployment through retirement.[C1]

MO-006e preserves the terminal lifecycle intent expressed by through retirement in the Original Requirement by requiring Crucible to transition an Infrastructure Environment to Retirement after its Retirement conditions are satisfied.

The separate requirements derived from MO-006 address:

Retirement represents the terminal lifecycle state of an Infrastructure Environment when its associated Operational Lifecycle revision defines Retirement as a terminal state.

Retirement conditions can include:

  • Authorization by the responsible authority
  • Completion of required operational activities
  • Resolution or disposition of outstanding failures and exceptions
  • Preservation of required configuration records
  • Preservation of required deployment records
  • Preservation of required security records
  • Preservation of required compliance records
  • Preservation of required Evidence
  • Preservation of required Provenance
  • Preservation of required Traceability
  • Completion of required data disposition
  • Completion of required Artifact disposition
  • Completion of required resource disposition
  • Revocation of credentials and access
  • Termination of services
  • Completion of archival activities

The associated Operational Lifecycle revision defines the Retirement conditions for the Infrastructure Environment.

Infrastructure Environment Retirement supports:

  • Controlled termination of infrastructure use
  • Prevention of premature Retirement
  • Completion of required preservation and disposition activities
  • Revocation of obsolete access
  • Release or disposition of infrastructure resources
  • Preservation of lifecycle history
  • Confirmation of the terminal lifecycle state

Satisfaction of the Retirement conditions permits Crucible to execute the Retirement transition. Satisfaction of those conditions does not establish successful completion of Retirement.

A failed or incomplete Retirement transition does not establish that the Infrastructure Environment entered the Retirement state. MO-006c addresses recording of the current lifecycle state after the transition attempt.

This requirement does not associate or initiate the Operational Lifecycle. MO-006a and MO-006b address those outcomes.

This requirement represents the specific Retirement transition derived from the broader lifecycle-transition behavior in MO-006d.

This requirement applies to:

  • Operational Lifecycle revisions
  • Retirement transitions
  • Retirement conditions
  • Retirement approvals
  • Retirement authorizations
  • Retirement requests
  • Retirement results
  • Retirement records
  • Infrastructure Environment records
  • Infrastructure Deployment records
  • Configuration records
  • Security records
  • Compliance records
  • Failure records
  • Exception records
  • Data-disposition records
  • Artifact-disposition records
  • Resource-disposition records
  • Credential-revocation records
  • Service-termination records
  • Archival records

Verification confirms that:

  1. The Infrastructure Environment is identified
  2. The associated Operational Lifecycle identifier and revision are identified
  3. The current lifecycle state is identified
  4. Retirement is a permitted target state of the associated Operational Lifecycle revision
  5. The Retirement conditions are identified
  6. Each Retirement condition is satisfied before the transition begins
  7. Crucible executes the Retirement transition
  8. A Retirement transition with one or more unsatisfied conditions is not executed
  9. The Retirement transition produces an identified result
  10. The Retirement result supports recording of the resulting lifecycle state
  11. A failed or incomplete Retirement transition does not produce an unsupported Retirement-state record
  12. The Retirement record preserves Traceability among the Infrastructure Environment, Operational Lifecycle revision, preceding lifecycle state, Retirement conditions, approvals, transition result, disposition activities, and resulting lifecycle state

Implemented and Verified.

Assess whether the current Crucible implementation transitions an Infrastructure Environment to Retirement when its Retirement conditions are satisfied.

Review and accept MO-006e as a proposed derived requirement created from the evaluation and decomposition of MO-006 in the Crucible System Requirements Specification, Version 1.1 Draft.

The following unresolved issues affect this requirement:

Define the Retirement conditions for each Operational Lifecycle revision that permits Infrastructure Environment Retirement.

Identify the authority responsible for approving or authorizing Retirement.

Define the lifecycle state or states from which an Infrastructure Environment may transition to Retirement.

Define the completion and failure criteria for the Retirement transition.

Define the data, Artifact, resource, credential, service, and archival disposition activities required before Retirement.

Define the behavior required when one or more Retirement conditions are not satisfied.

Define the behavior required when the Retirement transition fails, is interrupted, or remains incomplete.

This page is a leaf requirement page and omits a trailing :start from its namespace.

The parent MO-006 page is a non-leaf page and retains a trailing :start in its namespace.

Changes to the Statement should preserve:

  • Crucible as the responsible actor
  • The Infrastructure Environment as the lifecycle subject
  • Retirement as the target lifecycle state
  • Satisfaction of the Retirement conditions before transition execution
  • An identified Retirement result

The Retirement definition should identify:

  • The Operational Lifecycle identifier
  • The Operational Lifecycle revision
  • The Retirement transition identifier
  • The lifecycle state preceding Retirement
  • The Retirement target state
  • The Retirement conditions
  • The responsible approval or authorization authority
  • The Retirement completion criteria
  • The Retirement failure criteria
  • The required data disposition
  • The required Artifact disposition
  • The required resource disposition
  • The required credential revocation
  • The required service termination
  • The required archival activities
  • The associated Provenance
  • The associated Traceability

Material changes should receive review and should update the verification criteria, source records, and Issues section.
