Data Transfer

A Data Transfer moves or copies Data from an identifiable source to one or more identifiable destinations. The source and destination may be systems, Nodes, repositories, processes, actors, organizations, storage locations, communication endpoints, or execution environments.

A Data Transfer may occur through connected, disconnected, or air-gapped mechanisms. The term does not prescribe a transport protocol, medium, interface, serialization, or implementation technology.

Data Transfer remains distinct from Data Transformation. Transfer changes where Data is available or controlled. Transformation changes its form, Structure, representation, or value. One activity may perform both, but the two effects remain distinguishable.

A Data Transfer identifies the Data transferred, source, destination, initiation and completion times, transfer mechanism, applicable authorization, and outcome when those facts are required for interpretation, security, Provenance, or Traceability.

Transfer does not necessarily remove Data from the source or transfer legal ownership, responsibility, or custody. Those effects require explicit governing conditions.

DIDO-TE copies a governed Test Data package from a connected repository to removable media and then imports the package into an air-gapped Test Environment. Each movement is a distinguishable Data Transfer.
