R10 - Reference Architecture Description

FDIS-RA: [R10]

Doyle, Richard, and Matthew Wilezynski. Reference Architecture Description. Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration, United States Department of Defense, 2010.

This reference provides the architectural guidance used by FDIS-RA to explain the purpose and role of a Reference Architecture.

The publication describes a Reference Architecture as a mechanism that:

  • Establishes a common language for diverse stakeholder communities
  • Promotes consistency in addressing recurring classes of problems
  • Supports validation and comparison of independently developed systems
  • Encourages alignment with common standards, specifications, and architectural patterns

FDIS-RA applies these principles to federated environments that interpret, validate, compare, and govern regulated data.

The reference does not define the specific components, interfaces, governance mechanisms, or conformance provisions of FDIS-RA. It provides the general architectural foundation upon which the FDIS-RA definition of a Reference Architecture is based.
