Latency
Discussion
Latency represents the delay experienced by traffic as it moves through a network path.
In the context of Internet Quality of Service (Internet QoS), Latency reflects forwarding delay, queuing delay, transmission delay, propagation delay, and processing delay along the path.
Definition
network delay experienced by packet-switched traffic across a path or part of a path
Source
Generalised from Internet QoS and IP performance terminology.
Note
Latency is not throughput, bandwidth, jitter, packet loss, application response time, or DDS deadline behaviour.
Example
A health observation packet experiences lower latency when a network gives operational traffic preferred forwarding treatment.
