OMG decides which specifications to adopt via votes of its Membership. The selected specifications should align with MDA's architectural vision. OMG bases its decisions on both business and technical considerations. Once OMG adopts a specification, OMG makes the specification available for use by both OMG members and non-members alike, at no charge.

Section 3 provides an extended summary of the RFP process. For more detailed information, see the Policies and Procedures of the OMG Technical Process [P&P], specifically Section 4.2, and the OMG Hitchhiker’s Guide [Guide]. In the event of any inconsistency between this document, the Hitchhiker's Guide, and the Policies and Procedures, the P&P is always authoritative. OMG's Intellectual Property Rights Policy [IPR] governs all IPR-related matters.
