SIP-003 — Reference Architecture Constituents

Go to Annex C: Requirements

Statement

The architectural Model SHALL define the elements, Roles, relationships, and interaction constructs that comprise the Reference Architecture.

Rationale

A Reference Architecture requires more than a collection of named components. It must define the architectural constituents, their assigned responsibilities, how they relate, and how they interact.

Explicitly modeling these constituents establishes a common architectural vocabulary and allows reviewers and implementers to determine whether a proposed realization preserves the intended allocation of responsibilities and interactions.

Evaluation Criteria

The Submission satisfies this requirement when the architectural Model:

  1. Identifies each type of architectural element
  2. Defines the purpose and responsibilities of each architectural element
  3. Identifies the Roles that architectural elements may perform
  4. Defines the permitted relationships among architectural elements and Roles
  5. Defines the constructs used to represent interactions
  6. Identifies the architectural elements or Roles that participate in each type of interaction
  7. Defines constraints governing the use of the elements, Roles, relationships, and interaction constructs
  8. Uses these constituents consistently throughout the proposed Reference Architecture

Notes for Editors

SIP-002 — Formal Platform Independent Model requires a formal Platform Independent Model. SIP-003 defines the minimum categories of architectural content that the model must contain.

The requirement does not prescribe the names or number of architectural elements. Those decisions remain part of the proposed Reference Architecture.
