SIP-002 — Formal Platform Independent Model

Go to Annex C: Requirements

Statement

The Submission SHALL include a formal Platform Independent Model (PIM) of the proposed Reference Architecture.

Rationale

A formal Platform Independent Model provides a precise and reviewable representation of the proposed Reference Architecture. It establishes the architectural elements, roles, relationships, interactions, and constraints independently of the technologies used to implement them.

The formal model enables reviewers, implementers, and conformance authorities to distinguish the normative architecture from explanatory text, diagrams, examples, and platform-specific realizations. It also supports consistency analysis, model transformation, reuse, and the development of multiple Platform Specific Models (PSMs).

Evaluation Criteria

The Submission satisfies this requirement when:

  1. It includes an identifiable Platform Independent Model of the proposed Reference Architecture
  2. The modeling language and applicable language version are identified
  3. The model uses constructs having defined syntax and semantics
  4. The model represents the architectural elements, roles, relationships, interactions, and constraints defined by the Submission
  5. The model remains independent of any required implementation platform, product, programming language, or vendor technology
  6. Platform-specific extensions, mappings, or examples are distinguishable from the Platform Independent Model
  7. The model is consistent with the normative textual provisions of the Submission

Notes for Editors

SIP-001 — Platform-Independent Reference Architecture establishes platform independence as a property of the proposed Reference Architecture. SIP-002 requires the Submission to express that architecture as a formal Platform Independent Model.

This requirement does not independently mandate a particular modeling language. Any required modeling language or interchange format should be identified in a separate requirement.
