5.2.4 Conformance: Inspectability and Testability

Return to Evaluation Criteria

OMG considers whether the proposed specification defines conformance with sufficient precision to support objective assessment through manual inspection and automated testing.

Requirement

Requirement Level Statement
GPR-023 — Inspectable and Testable Conformance Recommended

The proposed specification SHOULD define sufficient constraints on Interfaces, externally observable behavior, conformance-relevant implementation characteristics, and required evidence to permit unambiguous conformance assessment through manual inspection and automated testing.

GPR-023 complements the following SIP-RA-specific conformance requirements:

Requirement Relationship
SIP-021 — Independent Conformance Requirements Separates conformance requirements from Interface interaction definitions
SIP-022 — Technology-Independent Conformance Points Requires conformance points that support inspection and verification independently of implementation technology
SIP-054 — Implementation Conformance Model Requires a conformance model defining the conditions under which an implementation conforms
SIP-055 — Architectural Element Conformance Classification Classifies conformance-relevant architectural elements as mandatory, optional, or conditional

Notes for Editors

The requirement Statement displayed in this section is transcluded from the authoritative GPR-023 Annex C requirement record and is not an independently maintained copy.

GPR-023 is recommended because it uses SHOULD.

A conformance-relevant implementation characteristic is a characteristic that affects satisfaction of a normative requirement. The proposed specification should not constrain implementation internals that do not affect conformance.

Manual inspection and automated testing are complementary assessment methods. Not every conformance condition needs to be assessable using both methods, but the complete conformance model should support an appropriate combination of them.

The terms “unambiguous” and “objective” do not require every conformance decision to use an identical assessment method. They require the applicable conditions, required evidence, and acceptance criteria to be defined with sufficient precision to support consistent conclusions.
