Baseline Approval

Baseline Approval is an authorization decision that designates an identified Baseline Revision as an approved reference for a defined purpose and scope.

Baseline Approval may identify:

• The approved Baseline
• The approved Baseline Revision
• The approving authority
• The approval decision
• The approval date
• The applicable purpose
• The applicable scope
• The effective period
• Applicable conditions
• Superseded Baseline Revisions

Baseline Approval differs from Baseline creation:

• Baseline creation produces or records a candidate Baseline
• Baseline Approval authorizes an identified Baseline Revision for a defined use

Baseline Approval also differs from Baseline Selection:

• Baseline Approval establishes that a Baseline Revision may serve as an approved reference
• Baseline Selection chooses an applicable Baseline Revision for a particular subject, activity, or context

Baseline Approval does not establish that every subject evaluated against the Baseline conforms to it.

Approval may apply to:

• A single use
• A defined class of subjects
• A specified environment
• A delivery phase
• An operational period
• An organization or administrative domain

A change to approved Baseline content should produce a new Revision subject to the applicable approval process.

An authorized governance body approves Revision 4 of a Security Baseline for use when building production Machine Images during a defined release period.
