A Processing Activity is a bounded occurrence of work performed on or with information. A person, organization, system, service or other processing agent may perform the activity.

A Processing Activity may receive information, evaluate it, validate it, transform it, derive new information, transmit it, store it, retrieve it or otherwise act upon it.

Recording a Processing Activity provides provenance for the information consumed or produced by the activity. The record may identify the processing agent, inputs, outputs, applicable rules, processing method, software or model version, start time, completion time and resulting status.

A Processing Activity may be manual, automated or performed through a combination of human and automated actions.

A Processing Activity is not the same as a processing-activity record. The activity represents the work performed. The record contains information describing that work.

A Processing Activity is also distinct from a [[public:99_annexes:annex-b-terms-and-definitions:l:lifecycle_event|Lifecycle Event]]. A Processing Activity describes work performed on or with information. A Lifecycle Event records an occurrence affecting a managed subject during its lifecycle. A Processing Activity may detect, record or produce information about a Lifecycle Event.

A Processing Activity may identify:

  * Processing agent
  * Start and completion times
  * Input information
  * Output information
  * Applicable policy, rule or agreement
  * Processing method
  * Software, model or algorithm version
  * Validation results
  * Status and outcome
  * Supporting Evidence and Provenance

===== Example =====

A valuation service receives an FX Contract, market observations and a valuation method. It calculates a Valuation and records the inputs, method, software version, processing time and resulting value.

The calculation constitutes a Processing Activity. The recorded information provides Provenance for the resulting Valuation.
