====== GPR-007 — Reuse of Existing Standards ====== [[public:00-sip-ra:99-annexes:annex-c-requirements:start|Go to Annex C: Requirements]] ===== Statement ===== The Submission SHALL reuse applicable existing OMG and other recognized standards rather than define new models that provide equivalent capabilities. ===== Requirement Level ===== Mandatory ===== Rationale ===== Reusing established standards promotes interoperability, consistency, implementation reuse, and compatibility with the existing standards ecosystem. It also reduces the risk of introducing overlapping concepts, conflicting definitions, and competing conformance requirements. A new model is appropriate when no applicable existing standard provides the required capability. In that case, the Submission must distinguish the unmet architectural need from capabilities already standardized elsewhere. ===== Evaluation Criteria ===== A conforming Submission demonstrates that: - Existing OMG specifications relevant to the proposed capabilities are identified - Other applicable recognized standards are identified - Capabilities available from those standards are evaluated - Applicable existing models and constructs are reused - Reused standards and their applicable versions are referenced - Relationships between reused standards and newly defined models are described - New models do not duplicate capabilities already provided by an applicable standard - Any decision not to reuse an apparently applicable standard is explained - Each new model addresses an identified capability not adequately provided by an applicable existing standard - Extensions to reused standards are distinguished from their normative definitions - Conformance responsibilities belonging to reused standards remain identifiable ===== Referenced By ===== {{backlinks>public:00-sip-ra:99-annexes:annex-c-requirements:gpr-007-reuse-of-existing-standards}} ===== Notes for Editors ===== The qualification “applicable” avoids requiring use of a standard that does not address the architectural need. “Equivalent capabilities” is used instead of “similar functionality” to provide a more objective basis for evaluation. GPR-007 does not prohibit new models. When a new model is necessary, the Submission must identify the unmet need and demonstrate that the model does not duplicate an applicable existing standard. SIP-026 preserves existing OMG specifications. SIP-034 preserves existing transport and exchange constructs. SIP-038 prohibits duplicating capabilities standardized by existing information-exchange, Interoperability, and semantic-federation specifications.
